About Matagalpa:

The city has a population of 109,100 (2005 census), while the population of the department is more than 480,000. Matagalpa is Nicaragua's fifth largest city and one of its most commercially active outside of Managua. Matagalpa is the second most important city in Nicaragua and is known as the "Pearl of the North" and "Land of Eternal Spring."  Matagalpa was founded by the Spaniards in 1554 during an attempt to find a water passage to the "Northern Sea", the Caribbean. (Nicaragua's Spanish colonization originated from the direction of the Pacific Ocean, which was called the Southern Sea by the Spaniards. In the 1800’s, there was a Danish and German influence in Matagalpa due to a few reasons, one being that there was gold found in the area during that time. For this reason, you will see lighter-skinned Nicaraguans who often have green or blue eyes (some of the most physically beautiful people in the world). Matagalpa is a wonderful place for your Spanish-studying adventure. It is cooler than much of the country and is nestled in a beautiful mountainous setting. Here you will study four hours a day, with two hours of conversation and two hours of grammatical study. We can help you set up a homestay with a local family or a stay at one of the local low-cost hotels or hostels. Just let us know your desires and we will help you make it a reality!
