About
Santander:
Santander become a
royal residence from 1913 to 1930, after city officials presented an
English-style Magdalena Palace to Alfonso XIII and his queen, Victoria
Eugenia. Santander was damaged by a 1941 fire, which destroyed the old
quarter and most of its dwellings. It was rebuilt along original lines,
with wide boulevards, a waterfront promenade, sidewalk cafes, shops,
restaurants, and hotels. Besides hotels and restaurants, Santander has
three beaches, Playa de Castaneda, Playa del Sardinero, and Playa de
la Concha, where people stretch out under candy-striped umbrellas. If
they become too crowded, take a 15-minute boat ride to El Puntal, a
beautiful beach that is rarely crowded, even in August. If you don't
like crowds or beaches, go up to the lighthouse, a little more than
2km (1 1/4 miles) from El Sardinero, where the views are wide-ranging.
A restaurant serves snacks both indoors and outdoors. Here, you can
hike along the green cliffs or loll in the grass.
